Resources
Use this page as a starting point. The Manitoba Employment Standards Branch is the authoritative source for current rules, forms, and amounts , if anything on this site disagrees with their site, theirs is right.
Official Manitoba Sources
Section titled “Official Manitoba Sources”- Manitoba Employment Standards Branch, the rules, forms, fact sheets, and how to file a claim. https://www.gov.mb.ca/labour/standards/
- The Employment Standards Code (Manitoba), the underlying legislation. Available through the Manitoba Laws website.
- Manitoba Labour Board, the appeal body for Employment Standards orders. https://www.manitoba.ca/labour/labbrd/
Federal Sources
Section titled “Federal Sources”If you work in banking, telecommunications, interprovincial transport, broadcasting, or another federally regulated sector, your rights are governed by the Canada Labour Code, not Manitoba’s:
- Canada Labour Standards, Employment and Social Development Canada. https://www.canada.ca/en/services/jobs/workplace.html
- Note: Fintech is not normally considered a federally regulated industry and so provincial employment standards will apply.
For Newcomers to Canada
Section titled “For Newcomers to Canada”- Settlement agencies in Manitoba, search the Manitoba Start directory or the federal newcomer services finder for an agency near you. Most settlement agencies offer employment-rights support in multiple languages at no cost. https://www.manitobastart.com/
- IRCC information for vulnerable workers, including open work permits for workers experiencing abuse. https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship.html
Finding Legal Help
Section titled “Finding Legal Help”This site does not endorse any specific lawyer or law firm. A few good starting points:
- Law Society of Manitoba, Lawyer Referral Service. A short consultation with a lawyer at a reduced introductory rate. https://www.lawsociety.mb.ca/
- Legal Help Centre of Winnipeg and other community legal clinics may be able to help directly or refer you, particularly if cost is a barrier.
- Many employment lawyers offer a free 15-30 minute initial consult. Use that consult to find out whether your situation has merit, what the realistic outcomes are, and what next steps make sense.
Other Supports
Section titled “Other Supports”- Workers’ Compensation Board of Manitoba, for workplace injury and illness, separate from Employment Standards. https://www.wcb.mb.ca/
- Manitoba Human Rights Commission, for discrimination and harassment based on protected grounds, separate from Employment Standards. https://www.manitobahumanrights.ca/
- Workplace Safety and Health (Manitoba), for workplace safety concerns. https://www.gov.mb.ca/labour/safety/

Section titled “Discussion and Peer Support”- r/EmploymentRightsCDN, a subreddit for discussion and peer advice on Canadian employment rights questions. Note: comments there are general discussion, not legal advice. https://www.reddit.com/r/EmploymentRightsCDN/
